Youth Summer Program Information

Technical Confidence. Creative Exploration. Building Community Through Photography.

At Perspectives Photo School, photography is both a craft and a way of seeing.

Students ages 12–18 spend their week in our dedicated photography studio in Emeryville — a creative space designed specifically for learning, experimentation, and thoughtful critique. From there, we explore the Bay Area together, applying new skills in environments rich with light, structure, and natural detail.

Students don’t just take photos.
They learn how to make them — with intention.

Technical Confidence

Creative growth is most powerful when students truly understand how light works — and how their camera responds to it.

Throughout the program, students learn to:

• Understand how light works — and manage exposure with confidence
• Adjust shutter speed, aperture, and ISO intentionally
• Respond to changing light in varied outdoor environments
• Control depth of field and motion
• Compose with clarity, structure, and balance

Technical instruction begins in the studio, is practiced immediately in the field, and reinforced through guided image review and conversation.

Students leave with real fluency — not guesswork — and the confidence to make independent decisions behind the camera.

Creative Exploration

Exploration builds stronger photographers.

Each week, students photograph in carefully chosen Bay Area locations such as:

• Golden Gate Park
• Land’s End
• Palace of Fine Arts
• Tilden Regional Park
• Urban architectural settings in San Francisco and Berkeley

Students learn to slow down, observe carefully, and respond thoughtfully to what they see. Exploration is guided, purposeful, and grounded in strong photographic principles.

Building Community

At Perspectives, students grow alongside one another.

They share work openly, offer thoughtful feedback, and learn to articulate what makes an image strong. The studio becomes a place where curiosity is welcomed, creative risks are supported, and students feel both challenged and encouraged.

Skill deepens when students feel seen.
Confidence grows when they feel supported.

For Students Ready to Go Further

Our Photography Intensive + Exhibition offers older students the opportunity to develop a cohesive body of work and present it publicly — strengthening both portfolio and confidence.

This is not simply a summer activity.

It is a place where students learn to see, to manage light with confidence, and to build community through creative work.
